Individual tax preparation

Federal and state income tax returns prepared with care, from the first document you gather to the filed return.

What this service covers

An individual return pulls together income from many places: wages, interest, investments, retirement accounts, rental property or self-employment. AD Accounting prepares federal and state income tax returns and helps you understand what ends up on them.

The goal is a return that is accurate, supported by your records and explained in plain language, so you know what was reported and why.

Who it is for

  • Employees with one or more W-2s who want the return checked and filed correctly
  • Households with investment, retirement or other non-wage income
  • Self-employed individuals and freelancers who report business income on their personal return
  • Landlords and owners of rental property
  • Anyone who needs to file a prior-year return or amend a return already filed

Common situations

A change in your year
Marriage, a new child, a home purchase or sale, a job change or a move between states can all change how a return is prepared.
Income without withholding
Self-employment, rental or investment income often has no tax withheld, which raises the question of estimated payments during the year.
A return that needs correcting
If something was missed or reported incorrectly, an amended return may be an option. We can review what was filed and explain the choices.
Tax documents that keep arriving
W-2s, 1099s, 1098s and brokerage statements arrive at different times. We help make sure nothing is overlooked before filing.

How it generally works

  1. Talk it through

Contact us by phone or email and describe your situation in general terms.

  2. Gather your records

We explain which income, deduction and identification documents are relevant to your circumstances, and tell you how to submit them.

  3. Prepare and review

Your federal and state returns are prepared from your records, and questions that affect the result are raised with you before anything is filed.

  4. File and keep a record

After you approve the return it is filed, and you have a copy for your records.

Federal and state returns are separate filings

A federal return goes to the IRS and a state return goes to your state tax agency. They use related information, but the rules, forms and deadlines differ, and some situations involve more than one state.

Tell us where you lived and worked during the year so the right state returns are considered.

Estimated tax payments

When not enough tax is withheld from your income, quarterly estimated payments may be required. Estimates can be reviewed when your return is prepared, and are also a topic in our tax planning service.

Common questions

Can you prepare a return for a prior year?

Often, yes. Contact us with the tax year involved and a general description of your situation, and we will explain what is needed.

What if I already filed and found a mistake?

An amended return may be appropriate in some cases. We can review what was filed and discuss whether amending makes sense.
